The film starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson, is the Sci Fi thriller of the year. Set in the present day aboard the International Space Station, the story is about first contact with extra terrestrial life. Outpost VFX Supervisor, Marcin Kolendo, led the project, working closely with VFX Supervisor, Giles Harding.
Outpost VFX provided over 100 shots, the vast amount of which were 3D set extension and rig removal. On top of this Outpost VFX were awarded the entire zero gravity yo-yo sequence which sees Jake Gyllenhaal playing with the retro toy. The scene was a big challenge for Outpost VFX as Director Daniel Espinosa wanted something realistic but also visually stunning.
The 100 vfx shots were diverse with careful attention given to the realism needed for all CG shots. Outpost VFX employed the help of Andy Jones, the UK yo-yo champion to advise on the dynamics of yo-yo's and how that might behave in space. Houdini simulations where created for the breath and tear sequences to make sure this was as physically accurate as possible. All of Outpost VFX's 100 shots were completed in just 7 weeks by a team of 30 artists.
This is the second project Outpost VFX have completed with Sony this year and our first for Skydance.
